The color

Where ABBOT & COSTELLO came from

Luke began exploring what might happen with two colors in a single project. Rather than take on both at once, he focused on one at a time.

Orange begins as a dirty rock record and evolves into a refined, deep purple sound. The colors were merged after months of tweaking and careful listening.

The process

How it got made

Where it started

Obsessed with improving on each record, Luke set out to create two colors instead of one. He built a studio from scratch, laying the foundation for what would become his most ambitious project to date โ€” ABBOT & COSTELLO.

What changed

Luke tried with his existing equipment, but his old tools couldn't give him the versatility two colors demanded. He found a custom tube microphone made by the technician who built Whitney Houston's. He bought a cat and named it Costello. Abbot is Luke, a saint. Then he began searching for the preamps to color the microphone.

The mix

Luke started experimenting with a different preamp for each song, to trace the change from orange to purple. The mixes took meticulous automation, and he invited Craig Bauer to help with them. It took time, but it paid off: Luke drafted over three hundred songs in a year, and twelve made the cut for ABBOT & COSTELLO.
